Back to School: Avoiding the Freshman 15

It’s that time again! I’ve got some Back to School tips to help you avoid the dreaded freshman 15!

First, a moment of silence for everyone who’s dealt with the “Freshman 15.” Uuuuh! It’s seriously the worst.

By my senior year the “Freshmen 15” had turned into “Senior 45.” Whoops. It sneaks on you and by the time you realize it, you’ve already created some pretty bad habits that are tough, but not impossible to break.transformation, weight loss, weight loss transformation, how to lose weight, how to avoid gaining weight, tips for college, freshman 15, how to lose the freshman 15, how to avoid the freshman 15

It took about 6months to break bad habits and lose most of my weight .

If you’re getting ready to head off to college for the first time or have fallen victim to the cruel and unusual punishment that can be the cafeteria, there is hope! Relying on dorm food doesn’t mean you have to eat crap and gain weight. There are simple ways to stay healthy even with limited resources and avoid the freshman 15.

Grab your notebook and pen, the lesson starts NOW and it’s the most important one you’ll have all year! After all, your health comes first!

Do’s & Don’ts!

DO visit your campus gym in your first week and get comfortable. You likely have a gym membership included in your tuition so use it!

Most gyms have great classes included in your membership. They’re awesome because you don’t have to plan your whole workout yourself {you have plenty on your mind already!} Plus, it’s a great way to make new friends who can help keep you accountable throughout the year as well!

DO have a plan! You know which classes you are taking and at what times, so why not write in your workouts? Scheduling them right after or before a class can be a good way to get you out of the dorms and help clear your head. If you don’t schedule them, it’s way to easy to make excuses to skip. Don’t let it happen. It can be 20min, but make sure you plan to workout 4-5 days a week. No excuses.

The LSF Hot Body Sweat Guide is a simple, straight forward workout guide for women that will have you feeling strong and confident in no time. You’ll get 8 weeks of workouts you can do in your dorm room with little to no equipment at all.

I also have tons of awesome workouts for you on my YouTube channel and it’s FREE! 🙂

DON’T let the cafeteria scare you. Let’s be real, it isn’t always the most  healthy or appetizing, but many schools have made-to-order food stations. If they can cook the unhealthy stuff, you can no doubt ask them to MAKE it healthy for you. Grilled chicken breasts, grilled veggies, quinoa or rice, etc. are all easily made somewhere like that.

If you’re wanting to shed some lbs or just learn what your meals should look like each day. grab your LSF Hot Body Meal Plan. It will be an amazing tool to help keep those freshman 15 at bay. It’s what I used to get rid of my 45lbs and finally see the strong confident person I knew was there the whole time! Plus, it will definitely help you avoid those 15lbs!

DON’T get in a habit of making those so called “healthy” microwavable dishes in your dorm. Anything that is pre-packed and says “healthy” on it, is probably far from it. If you have a mini fridge and a microwave there is plenty you can make. Fresh salads, steamed veggies and clean pre-cooked chicken breasts are great too!

Do get a blender! Even if you have to wash it in your bathroom sink it’s worth it! You can make awesome healthy smoothies for breakfast or mid-day snakes to fuel you up without having to spend a lot. It’s always good when you can control exactly what goes into your smoothies so you can make sure you aren’t just getting a sugar loaded treat. Get some of my smoothie recipes here

I have tons of easy recipes on YouTube that you can make in your dorm too! Check them out!

DON’T forget that it’s not just what you eat…but what you drink. This includes sodas, coffees, smoothies etc. The worst thing you could possible do is cut calories from real foods so you can have an extra chocolate mocha frap. That sugar is not your friend!

If you’re of age and going to be drinking alcohol, be smart about it. 1. Always in moderation, too much drinking is just as bad for the waist line as it is for the next morning 😉 2. Clear liquids are where it’s at. Stay away from the sugary drinks. DO Have FUN! University/College is one of the best experiences of your life, enjoy it. If you remember that a balanced life is all you need to be happy & healthy, you’ll be good to go!

I promise you if you can keep these things in mind, I know you will be successful at keeping the Freshman 15, or 20, or 30, away!

Thank you so much for posting this, Katie! I am in college right now and I suffer from binge-eating disorder. This should help a lot <3

Hi Katie, I’ve been trying to purchase your workout plan book and it won’t allow me too when I click it. The page just refreshes constantly, I’ve tried on multiple computers. Is there something I can do to purchase it? Thanks ?
